Pewabic tile grounds the music room of this 1920s Ann Arbor Tudor. A large contemporary piece of art hangs prominently on a limestone fireplace, adding contrast to the traditional moody-blue bookcases. String instruments are sprinkled throughout, along with a baby grand piano. The challenge of how to balance the home’s original grandeur, including its hand-hewn beams and gleaming wood surfaces, with modern sensibility was achieved through the selection of transitional art, furniture, and lighting.

An unused den underwent a stunning transformation to become the master bathroom in this 1912 bungalow. The room, which offers a sprawling view of the gardens and offers lots of natural light, was stripped to the studs. A new bathroom design called for floor-to-ceiling paneled walls, a cast iron soaking tub, and a stall shower made entirely of slab marble. A 17th century English oak table was repurposed into a pair of vanities with custom cabinets.

Originally designed by David Osler, this Mid-century home was updated to create a comfortable space for a modern family. In the primary bath, a white oak vanity and a shapely vintage-inspired chair add warmth and interest, as do the handmade ceramic tiles on the wall and natural stone counters. A soaking tub with a floor-mounted faucet stuns.

This kitchen has just one north-facing window, so natural light was a concern. Pure white was the perfect solution for the cabinetry, while green and yellow accents provide pops of color. The stools feature F. Schumacher fabric, laminated for a family-friendly finish. The smaller prep island was made to look like a market table, and includes hidden drawers for storage and electrical. It was important to maintain this kitchen’s classic vibe but give it a unique identity.

Within this Mediterranean-inspired home, a spacious kitchen was designed for entertaining as well as family living. The island’s stone mimics an origami piece, as the ends fold in to taper back under the stone overhang. Warm white oak tones pair perfectly with the light, custom paint color that also ties in with the statement stone seen on the island and range wall. The lack of upper cabinets keeps the space open and airy.

TRADITIONAL MASTER SUITE

When the current owners purchased this 1912 bungalow, the main bedroom on the first floor had a small en suite bathroom and an even smaller, pie-shaped closet. It was decided that an adjacent den would become the bathroom, and the former bathroom was transformed into a walk-in closet. In the bedroom, stained trim was added to warm the space, complementing the oak tester bed that was newly constructed in England.

Inspired by luxury hotels, the clients craved a personal retreat at home. Warm lighting, subtle layers of texture, and natural elements were key to the success of this project. The master suite was already large, but had an awkward layout. The designer reimagined the suite by relocating the entry door and eliminating a rarely used bar. This new floor plan allowed for a larger walk-in closet and the addition of a cozy nook for reading.

When this 1912 bungalow was purchased by its current owners, the structure had seen its share of shoddy home repairs. Working room-by-room over several years, the interior was transformed. While staying true to the Arts and Crafts architecture inherent to the home, it was decided that a heavy influence of classic English country house would add to the aesthetic. Timeless backgrounds including glazed porcelain tile, bluestone flooring, natural slab marble, and stained oak paneling are recurring themes.

The challenge was to create a well-edited, highly functional, and streamlined workspace that didn’t feel overly cluttered and tight. The office needed to hold samples, books, electronics, and more — and, at the same time, have an ample amount of surface space for laying out materials. In addition, it needed to feel warm and personal. The designer used California Closets to help with the custom built-ins that were essential to the room’s success.
