The upper loft overlooking the great room, dining area, and kitchen in this Dexter residence holds a secret. The three bookcases showcase the homeowners’ collection of books, family photos, and memorabilia; however, if one gently pulls J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” from the shelf, a latch releases the center bookcase — opening a concealed door to a hobby shop/workroom.

STAIR AND RAILING

1st Place

Heller & Associates with Dana Jacobs Designs

A gracefully curved half-wall adorned with a richly stained cap, alongside wooden treads accentuated by a plush carpet runner, converge to create a stairway that isn’t merely functional — it’s also a standout design feature. The mission was to create a stairway that not only facilitates movement, but also invites admiration.

DECORATIVE GLASS AND MIRROR

1st Place

Heller & Associates with Pamela Singer & Associates

Locally sourced iron doors featuring full glass lites, located between the kitchen and sitting room of this home, promote open spaces, transparency, and a commitment to the environment. The full-glass lites maximize natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting, while sourcing local iron reduces the carbon footprint. This design doesn’t just cater to the eye but to the future, setting a benchmark in sustainable and stylish living.

FLOORING/RUGS

1st Place

Dayna Flory Interiors

Discovered while the designer was remnant shopping at a local workroom, this Missoni carpet was waiting for its perfect home. The workroom staff custom-serged the edges and installed it with a perfect waterfall edge. The runner was carried through the second-floor hall, visually connecting and enlarging the space, and its bold color brightens up the enclosed foyer. This carpet brings pure joy to the homeowners and is a stunning first look for guests.

INTERIOR USE OF STONE

1st Place

Maison Birmingham with Ellwood Interiors Inc.
and Brian Neeper Architecture, P.C.

In this kitchen, the island’s stone mimics an origami piece as the ends fold in to taper back under the stone overhang. Slightly warm white oak tones pair perfectly with the light, custom paint color and tie in perfectly with the statement stone seen at the island and along the entire range wall. The lack of upper cabinets and clutter keeps the space open and airy, maintaining a breezy Mediterranean feel.

INTERIOR USE OF TILE

1st Place

Concetti

The bathroom of this historic Detroit apartment is a harmonious blend of heritage and modernity. The challenge was figuring out how to create a new relationship in a cherished space, prompting a strategic renovation. Meticulous tile work became the hallmark of this project. London trim, soldier-stacked vertical tile, and a bespoke floral mosaic floor design interwoven with terrazzo resulted in a tapestry of historical aesthetics.

INTERIOR/EXTERIOR LIGHTING

1st Place

Armina Interiors

Layers of lighting provide the homeowners with the ability to control a range of effects. Strip lighting was concealed in niches behind panels of porcelain slabs, while sculptural mirrors were back-lit to highlight the veining in the porcelain-clad walls and offer flattering lighting. A dramatic chandelier composed of 19 frosted, hand-blown glass orbs was suspended from the ceiling as a focal point for the space.

FIREPLACE

1st Place

White & Liebler Architects

Anchoring the heart of the home is this two-story Montana stone fireplace. Larger-scaled stones spill into the seating area, allowing the full-slab limestone hearth to nestle into the fireplace. A large stone mantel sits on top of stone corbels, displaying the warm tones of the quarried stone. A local blacksmith fabricated the iron screen. The fireplace highlights the unmatched craftsmanship of the experienced local trades.

CUSTOM CABINET INSTALLATION

1st Place

Vogue Furniture

The focal point of this 1960s estate’s main-floor renovation was the kitchen. By removing the original interior walls, the kitchen doubled in size. The designers then incorporated floor-to-ceiling vertical walnut millwork slats that tie together the kitchen, coffee bar, and family room. The coffee bar — featuring bronze-tinted glass sliding doors — complements the drop zone, which includes a lit shelf and drawers outfitted with charging stations.

CUSTOM FURNITURE

1st Place

Design Bar Detroit with Probuilt Woodworking

This record unit was designed and handcrafted locally for a Bloomfield Hills home. Constructed from white oak, the unit’s metal supports were engineered to make it seem as though the shelves are floating atop the base. It also features three pull-out record storage drawers; each holds about 50 records. The caning on the doors adds natural texture while also providing ventilation for the sound system equipment within.

REPURPOSED FURNITURE

1st Place

Ruth Casper Design Studio

This vintage chest was repurposed and given new life as a custom vanity cabinet adorned with a floral porcelain wading pool sink. The original antique brown wood finish was updated to a warm ebony. A traditional-style faucet was selected in a modern brass finish, to complement the existing hardware. The dramatic mirror frame echoes the scrolling textures and patterns found on the cabinet.
