HISTORIC RENOVATION/RESTORATION (50 YEARS OR OLDER)
1st Place
Kathleen McGovern Studio with Dr. Michelle & Mr. Max Wiener
In this remarkable transformation, the HVAC was upgraded, the original plaster was repaired or replaced, and new electrical was installed. The natural limestone fireplace and original hand-hewn beams were stripped of their white paint, and the French doors and library floor were replaced. The circular motion of the entry is defined by the tri-colored slate floor specified by the architect in 1931; curved railings echo the movement and remain intact.

SMALL-SPACE REMODEL (UP TO 1,000 SQUARE FEET)
1st Place
Stalburg Design
Originally a small inset area, this peninsula bar kept homeowners trapped on one side with their guests blocking them in. By creating a new entrance from the foyer, the space is now clearly defined for the homeowners, while guests have the ability to gather in a more natural way. There are spaces to read, relax, or chat by the fire. This renovation makes a grand statement!

The additions to this home include a new front entry and a first-floor primary suite, along with a deck along the riverfront living spaces. The redesign of this home placed the great room, dining area, and kitchen along the riverfront, and relocated the primary suite and home office to the front of the home. A deeper entry hall provides a welcoming, informal space.

Maison Birmingham with KSI Kitchen & Bath

The clients bought an old firehouse in Detroit to realize their dream of creating a live/work studio. They wanted to retain the structure’s charm and character while incorporating a modern, creative style. The clients handled their own construction, but required help with the cabinetry and kitchen design. Full-access cabinetry achieves a modern look with maximum functionality. Graphite and pearl on a slim Shaker-style door provide a grounding element.

The six-bedroom, six-bathroom spec home has water views from all levels, including a rooftop deck with an outdoor kitchen, fireplace, and dining and seating areas. Because there wasn’t a client, the team was able to experiment with some creative ideas that hadn’t been tried before. Wood paneling or tile adorns every wall, and custom-inset cabinetry, quality millwork, and high-end finishes and appliances result in an extraordinary home.

OVERALL HOME
1st Place
Brian Neeper Architecture, PC with La Marco Homes
Sweeping roof lines, overhang extensions, wood brackets, box-out windows, and trim surrounds set this home’s traditional details. The front entry, hidden from the street, reveals itself during the arrival procession, which takes visitors into the heart of the site. An arrival court includes a covered front entry porch; the soaring windows of a stair tower and a stone chimney are eye-catchers. Easy and flowing describe the interior spaces.
