This first-place win in Interior Use of Stone, by Maison Birmingham, showcases warm, livable, and versatile materials and finishes, much like an outfit you can dress up or down. Photo by Martin Vecchio.

This garage was transformed into a unique space. The bar’s custom radius cabinets seamlessly transition into built-ins, including a hidden doorway. In other areas, the ceilings were custom-built using black walnut, and made to wrap around a steel structure. Four pieces were installed, then stained on-site.

This staircase frames the entrance in a distinct cascading, curvilinear design. The defining touch is the gracefully curved steel rail of the overlook balcony and staircase, with a black Powder Cote finish and clear monolithic safety tempered glass that allows the light to come through and ensures the view is unobstructed.

Backless bronze upper cabinetry allows the marble walls to flow uninterrupted from counter to ceiling. The cabinet frames were constructed of solid bronze, and mechanically fastened with window pane doors set on custom hinges. LED light coves run vertically at the outside corners, consistently illuminating the interiors while remaining undetectable. Solid antique brass and polished stainless accents, with custom hardware, complete this story.

In this space, a mod design classic is revived using terrazzo tile floors — the perfect material for an all-seasons space. The floor is a fresh take on the timeless, composite material and is constructed of cream-colored concrete with a celestial pattern made of dark gray marble flecks. The design is just one of the many classic and graphic elements revisited in this unique and playful interior.

INTERIOR USE OF STONE
1st Place
Maison Birmingham

A lot of the inspiration here — the light blues, layers of texture, patterns, and rich millwork — came from southeastern designers and architects. The style is warm, livable, and versatile, much like an outfit you can dress up or down. The essence is layers of warmth and texture within a context of clean, architectural lines. Intricate stone and porcelain paneling simulates more traditional (yet updated) millwork.

INTERIOR USE OF TILE

Applied to the face of the fireplace and log storage is a distinctly unique concrete tile. Formed so the edges peel back, each tile appears to be handmade. The peeled-back corners are back-lit with LED lighting. Charcoal-gray concrete tiles are framed by a blackened steel framework and pair nicely with the modern, light-colored terrazzo floor. Although there’s contrast in color and texture, it remains cohesive in style.

The interior and exterior lighting shines through expansive windows, allowing light to spread out over the surrounding landscape. The exterior lighting accentuates the strong architectural lines of this magnificent residence; prominent stone piers at the entrance are up-lit, complementing the four fire pots and lighting the ceiling of the canopy. An infinity edge pool glows with blue-tinted LED lights, and is complemented by up-lit landscape lighting.

To bring a modern, maximalist style to a dated space, no surface was left untouched. A surround of dimensional tile with inlaid brass by Alison Rose for Artistic Tile provides a dramatic focal point, while a floor-to-ceiling tile application with curvy vertical lines draws attention to the double-height ceilings. Ceramic balls serve as an alternative to traditional fireplace logs, and brass accessories complement the stone’s graceful curves.

Always wanting to create spaces that enhance the homeowner’s enjoyment of the space, a book nook for young children was constructed in a special spot: the underutilized space under the stairs. A reading light, beautiful trim details, and down-filled pillows and cushions beg the children — and their parents — to crawl in and get cozy with a good book. Recently, “Charlotte’s Web” was waiting to be enjoyed.
