The client wanted to establish a Western ranch in the Midwest. Much thought was given to creating a rugged feel and plant palette, using plants that thrive in the Midwest. Oversized outcrops of stone were hand-selected from Canadian quarries. Critical views were identified and became the seating areas in the outdoor spaces, directing attention to rolling prairie grasslands with topography similar to the West. You’ll want to bring along a cowboy hat and cowboy boots!

The use of natural cut stone is prevalent on the exterior of this mountain modern home. Clean linear stonework with natural limestone caps adds to the natural feel of the home and its setting. Inspired by ski trips out West, this home combines rustic earthy elements with contemporary architecture. The stone continues inside, where it’s featured along stairwells and around the fireplace, providing that feeling of being connected to an outdoor setting.

The reflecting pool introduces a spiritual water element into the landscape. The bottom of the pool is lined with aqua-and-blue river rock, giving an aura of ethereal beauty as it reflects the ever-changing sky and the surrounding landscape. The soothing blue water instills calmness, transporting you to a dreamy place. Mounds of icy-silver-blue blue fescue grasses are planted in linear formations in beds of black landscape fire glass, producing a striking contrast of texture and color.

Nestled in layers of plantings that soften the required pool enclosure elements, this space is anchored by strong, clean lines. Long stone-steppers lead from the carriage house to the water, flowing into a set of shallow steps. Brass inserts allow for easy installation and removal of basketball and volleyball nets. A blue granite pebble sheen finish sparkles, while handmade clay tiles with a special finish for pools run along the water line, adding a burst of visual excitement.

A stunning fireplace anchors this patio, which overlooks a two-acre parcel with a beautiful pool. The fireplace is grounded in gorgeous and varied Petoskey fieldstones, and features a limestone hearth and mantle. As your eye moves upward, the cedar shake adds another layer of texture and interest. The colors of the fieldstone, limestone, and cedar shake work so beautifully together. There’s no doubt this is a timeless beauty!

The landscape at the Heron Woodland Project was designed to create a space the homeowners could enjoy for their retirement. Multiple seating areas were constructed so they can savor all aspects of their landscape — including their custom art, unique fire-torches, garden planter boxes, two-tiered fire pit, and water feature. Lighting was a very important element for safety and to create ambience; the hillside and plantings are highlighted during the evening hours, when the homeowners entertain outdoors.

This complete backyard renovation centers around a pool oriented along the axis of the house’s living room and a recently renovated carriage house. Nestled between the pool and the house is an arrangement of cozy outdoor rooms including a dining terrace and covered fireplace lounge. Radiant heating ensures that outdoor entertaining can last well into the chilly autumn. Marking the transition from dining terrace to pool, several specimen cylindrical form hornbeams add a sense of verticality and subtle formality.
