2021 Readers’ Choice | Best Overall Home
Kudos all around to the folks at Milford-based M.J. Whelan Construction, which took first place in the Readers’ Choice award for Best Overall Home. The winning beauty is perfectly situated on a sprawling four-acre site in the historic village of Milford. At 5,000 square feet, the modern Farmhouse-style home, completed in 2019, looks as if it’s been there for at least 100 years. This new-build replaced an existing home on the expansive property.
Double doors create a welcoming entry, where a stately foyer leads to a staircase with tall wainscoting and classic millwork that extends to the second story. Coffered ceilings set the tone for the cozy home, while tall doors and bowed windows stretch from the lower-level walkout to the main floor.
Timeless design features include wood floors, warm tones, and distinctive spaces like the great room and its fireplace, and the splendid main-floor master suite.
Charming details define the exterior, which features a black-and-white palette and exudes classic character and even a hint of Southern flair. With a mix of design characteristics, including a wraparound porch and a metal roof, traditional meets modern in this winning combination.
The striking structure also includes a spacious covered patio, complete with a fireplace and a built-in barbecue. Its tongue-and-groove ceiling, with open timbers, creates additional beauty. A carriage house that’s destined to become a recreational space also is located on the pretty property.
Well done, M.J. Whelan Construction!
