Millwork

1st – Walter Herz Interiors, with Vogue Furniture

This beautiful Art Deco elevator foyer is enhanced by its octagon shape and exquisite mahogany panels. The gold leaf domed ceiling, with an antique chandelier and matching sconces, reflects onto the beautiful grain of the wood panels. One of the panels hides the opening to the elevator, creating an illusion of an all-paneled room. The custom-designed furnishings reflect the Art Deco period.

Stair and Railing

1st – DesRosiers Architects, with Northern Staircase Company Inc.

This exciting, sculptural, 12-inch-diameter, 4-foot by 6-inch-wide helical circular stair is a pleasure to navigate and to view. The stringers, LED-lit treads, and railings are fabricated from clear sapele mahogany wood. The glass and railing supports are solid half-inch bronze metal, with stainless steel inserts. The curved walls and stepped ceiling radiate from the center of this magnificent focal point.

Decorative Glass & Mirror

1st – AZD Architects, with T2 Fabrication Company

This water feature was creatively fabricated and engineered. Fourteen pieces of glass were suspended on pivoting hinges at adjustable opposing angles. The water then flows past five levels of living space, starting at the fifth-level spa and going all the way down to the kitchen. The one-of-a-kind glass element can be viewed from every single room in the house.

Interior Use of Stone

1st – VanBrouck & Associates Inc., with Luxe Homes Design + Build and Ellwood Interiors

In this master bath, his-and-hers vanities draw the eye to the free-standing bathtub, which is the focal point. Driftwood shelves built into the stone walls create niches for storing towels and soaps, and the rough-cut texture of the limestone alcove walls are juxtaposed with the smooth limestone floor and countertops. The room, a study of textures and patterns, is united by a palette of soothing grays.

Interior Use of Tile

1st – Cranbrook Custom Homes

The Esperance’s grand, two-story foyer features smooth, crisp marble on the floor and walls, contrasted with a rustic, rugged terra-cotta ceiling. The tiled terra-cotta ceiling was modeled after a church in France, and is a continuation of the curves seen throughout the rest of the home — from the ceiling in the great room to custom muntins in the windows to elegant archways.

Interior/Exterior Lighting

1st – DesRosiers Architects

This magnificent residence is situated on the tip of a peninsula on the largest inland lake in Oakland County. Seeing it from the lake at night is breathtaking: The exquisite interior materials, furnishings, see-through fireplace, helical curved staircase, and indirectly lit LED stepped, arched ceilings are all exposed through the expansive bronze tinted glass exterior. By night, this residence is an absolute shining jewel.

Fireplace

1st – Walter Herz Interiors, with Marie Howard Showroom

This stunning fireplace creates the focal point for a large master bedroom. Gold gilt, vertical relief panels complement the scale of this dramatic wall. The Italian antique mirrors from the 1940s were removed from their original frames and joined together, amplifying the height of the room. The marble surround is an impressive background for the custom-designed brass screen, which accessorizes the grandness
of this fireplace wall.

Custom Cabinet Installation

1st – VanBrouck & Associates Inc., with Luxe Homes Design + Build and Oliver Max Interiors

In the tradition of English country houses, an anteroom transitions the main entry hall from the stately paneled library in this residence. The cabinetry conceals a beverage refrigerator and icemaker, while copper wire mesh upper cabinets enhance the display of heirloom glassware. Under-cabinet lighting highlights the repurposed vintage walnut-framed, antique mirror squares installed as the backsplash, and a refined, classic egg-and-dart detail decorates the crown molding frieze.

Custom Furniture

1st – Vogue Furniture, with Schuster Homes

Constructed of bleached koa, this modern bar has a soft, flowing, organic wood grain panel wrapping the back wall, with lighted display niches. The ceiling panel supports a custom-made minimal box light fixture. The balance of the functional cabinetry consists of dark mahogany, with stone work surfaces. The stone wall to the right of the bar slides to access a hidden room.

Repurposed Furniture

1st – Cotton Bucket Designs

This kitchen island was found in northern Michigan, covered with snow. The rusted wheels, oversprays of paint, and planked top added to the character of the oversized wooden cart. It was transported downstate, cleaned thoroughly, and the planked top was heavily sanded, planed, and reworked. Once in place, careful attention was used to drill through the huge metal wheels to secure it permanently to the floor.
