A monochromatic color scheme is more interesting when blending finishes of different scale and texture. Here, I selected a dramatic circle motif wallcovering in charcoal, tub tile in concrete-like porcelain and mini glass mosaic, wood-grain tile for the floor, and fabric with some shimmer for the windows. Everything relates well through color. Duralee wallcovering, Pindler & Pindler fabric, all tile is Virginia Tile.

When establishing a color palette, look for inspiration just beyond your windows. The hues found in nature — whether the blue of a water view, or violet and pink from a perennial garden — will make the space feel in harmony with its setting. Shown, above center, Kravet chairs, RJ Thomas sofas, Rozmallin fabrics.

We’ve noticed clients are building smaller homes, but adding important finishing touches like custom millwork. Many people under-budget the trim work, but it’s the icing on the cake. Whether stained or painted, millwork adds depth and visual interest to the home.

I love the trend toward graphic patterns. The chevron can be seen on sophisticated pillows, hardwood flooring, and even wallcoverings. This Martin Lawrence Bullard pattern, called “Fez,” was inspired by tile at the Taj Mahal. It makes a statement. Available at F. Schumacher & Co.
