It’s that time of year again — the annual Detroit Design Awards!
After a year of preparation, our favorite celebration is finally here, and those of us at Detroit Design couldn’t be more excited to announce this year’s award-winners.
This past fall we received a record-breaking number of entries — proof of the abundant talent that makes up this great state. Our panel of industry experts, made up of some of the country’s most prestigious and influential design leaders, weighed each submission carefully and meticulously. Once their votes were cast, the winners were clear. Today, we enthusiastically recognize those top honors.
What I love about these awards goes beyond the inspiration that’s evident in each project entered. The Detroit Design Awards provide a chance for so many people to see the creative genius of the designers, builders, architects, and landscape artists who fill these pages with their brilliance.
The judges marveled over an architectural wonder perfectly perched on a dune — a residence that not only features three levels and a site-perfect layout, but exceeds the requirements of the Michigan Critical Dune Act, proving that great design can also be environmentally sustainable. They also were excited to see a Wallace Frost home find new life, a master bath that seems to float above the clouds with its views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a winding staircase that effortlessly blends function with art, a Bauhaus-inspired gem in Ann Arbor with a perfect palette of primary colors, a serene backyard landscape with a specimen gingko tree and a cascading stream, a bookstore in Oxford that elevates the shopping experience for its guests, and so many more one-of-a-kind designs.
One of my favorite categories is our Readers’ Choice for Overall Home. I not only love to see the diverse array of homes that are nominated (more than 40 this year!), but I love that the winner of this category is chosen by you — the heart of our publication. This year, a 10,000-square-foot masterpiece from Sapphire Luxury Homes reigned supreme, and from its limestone façade to its grand great room, it’s easy to see why. You’ll definitely want to take note of our 2025 Rising Star, Detroit-based designer Colin Tury. Make sure to check out his work in person at Supino Pizzeria in Eastern Market and the much-talked-about modern Mexican eatery, Vecino, in Midtown.
I also would like to acknowledge and thank the photographers of these remarkable spaces. Their ability to capture the beauty of these impressive homes and businesses, from the show-stopping angles to the subtle textures and the slight nuances, demands applause. Their brilliant photography brings to life the story and passion behind each project.
I want to congratulate this year’s award-winners and their teams for the tremendous efforts that went into these prize-winning places, as well as for the ingenuity and originality displayed in each nominated project. Well done!
Let the celebration begin!
