The renovation of the existing kitchen/butler’s pantry in this 1926 Normandy Tudor included custom lead-and-metal windows to keep with the integrity of the home. Original brick walls were used and extended into the addition. Custom white mosaic marble flooring imported from China was used throughout. Two inset floor medallions were inspired by a marble design in the Splendido Hotel in Portofino, Italy. Countertops are Calcutta marble. Overhead cabinets were omitted to emphasize views and reinforce the minimal design, with floating shelves inserted into the brick, providing storage. Custom white-lacquered lower cabinets were hand-crafted locally by Cabinet One.
Kitchens by Richards, Birmingham
This elegant, high-contrast kitchen is the focal point of a family living space that includes the dining and family rooms. Key elements include professional appliances, a custom hood, and classic detailing with simple, traditional lines. Painted white maple cabinets on the perimeter contrast with black high-gloss hickory for the island and a “crocodile-skin” backsplash. Counters are topped with white Calcutta Gold marble. The floor is dark oak. Cabinetry includes custom pullouts and a drinking fountain.

Traditionally styled inset cabinets with Shaker-style doors blend with elegant pilaster and crown details. Adding to the classic look are glass-door sections above the farmhouse sink. Painted cabinets are classic white with quarter-sawn oak islands finished in a medium stain, adding warmth. One island contains a prep sink and dishwasher, which frees the main sink to be a clean-up area. The second serving island is on wheels, allowing it to be moved next to the working island to create one large work surface.
Serba Interiors, Birmingham
This small kitchen with numerous doorways and full exposure to adjacent living areas was designed to maximize space by taking advantage of the island for additional storage and seating. Custom, handmade cabinets are lacquered red, and the full-height backsplash is brick-patterned quartzite stone. The sleek stainless-steel appliances, plumbing fixtures, and custom hood all work in conjunction with the black wrought-iron pendant light fixtures. The island lends contrast with its warm, hand-hewn walnut tones beside the vegetable-dyed kilim runner.
Surpass Renovations, Grand Rapids
A small, outdated kitchen in an old estate was enlarged to include a sunroom that provides natural light and ample gathering space. The open floor plan allows access from the kitchen to nearby rooms and the terrace. The kitchen includes a large workspace and a sitting area with fireplace. It features custom cabinetry, imported custom tile, and professional-grade appliances, including an industrial stove. Amenities include a wood-burning pizza oven and wine refrigerator.

This kitchen was designed to have a seamless transition with the living and dining rooms. A horizontal module that’s carried throughout the home also clads the entire kitchen. The two-component module is made of rift-cut white oak with two stains. Functional components of the kitchen are hidden behind the millwork. The countertop is custom-colored stained concrete.

Gray walls and polished finishes create a serene setting in this bath, which has two identical white-marble top vanities with nickel-plated fixtures. Dividing the room is a large, jetted tub. Polished white Thassos marble, laid horizontally in large squares, flows across the tub deck and onto the floor, where it’s broken up by a Greek-key mosaic border around a diagonally laid “rug.” The shower has a multi-head shower system and overhead ambient-light panel.
VanBrouck and Associates, Brighton
Double doors create a dramatic entry to this spacious walk-in shower set in the turret of a Shingle-style home. The step-down shower, which can be entered from either side, is flooded with natural light from multiple windows in the 16-foot-high space. The shower offers his-and-her controls including showerheads, a personal shower, and rain heads. Glass separates the shower from the freestanding jetted tub. An understated décor with a palette of whites and pastels and simple chrome fixtures create a calm setting.

Remodeling this bath involved placing a new tub atop a “rug” of metallic penny rounds directly beneath a skylight. A dark-oak, wood-framed mirror reflects light into the space.
Former flat-panel doors were replaced with oak doors that have acid-etched glass centers. A white-quartz countertop offers a clean look and durability.

This “gentleman’s bath” has a look that’s casual, contemporary, and rustic. A pebble-tile floor inset is surrounded with warm shades of gray and taupe. Cherry cabinets provide a nice contrast and brighten the muted palette.
Classic Lines Interior Design, Farmington Hills
This vintage-look master bath has black-and-white basket-weave patterned marble floors and shower walls. A contemporary version of an old soaking tub with jets sits in a window alcove that overlooks a pond and meadow. His-and-her porcelain pedestal sinks add to the traditional look. A collection of black-framed ink drawings echoes the other black accents. White bead board and pale-green walls lend a clean, crisp look.
