Get In Gear

A leafy fall palette of warm scarlets, yellows, and oranges lures us to the countryside. One of the best ways to take in autumn’s splendor is on an afternoon bike ride down unpaved paths or quiet backroads. But any day now, late afternoon’s golden glow will yield to darkness — perhaps sooner than we’d like. As daylight saving time ends Nov. 3 and we turn our clocks back one hour, we can still reminisce about our two-wheel sojourns with this 35-inch-high bicycle desk lamp, which cleverly showcases the wonders of mechanics, movement, spokes, and gears. “It’s the moving parts that really get the attention,” says Arhaus’ chief creative officer Gary Babcock, referring to the antique pedal that when pushed actually churns the wheel and chain. Its old-fashioned appeal is moderated by a contemporary black finish. This is a lamp that can undoubtedly take you places. Bicycle Desk Lamp, $399, at Arhaus, Somerset Collection South, Troy, arhaus.com. (And next spring when you’re ready to hit the road again, consider a hand-built — one at a time! — bicycle from Detroit-based Shinola, see below, shinola.com.)
