This whimsical potting shed was designed to be a charming place to pot plants, play in the garden, and display collections of potting containers, birdhouses, tools, and other garden relics. Designed to evoke childhood memories of carefree summer days, it features an Old-World French country aesthetic

DESIGNER’S VISION – The fence sections are high enough to give privacy to both yards, but the transoms are light enough to see through and be neighborly.

1st – WOOD METAL STONE
A stained-glass window in the front of the home inspired the gate and fence for this residence. The lines of lead between the glass feature a branch, or vine, look to them. Those lines evoked a light and natural-looking detail. The gate is steel, while the fence sharing the transom detail is steel and cedar. Both the gate and the fence are painted a dark, rich brown that matches the trim of the home.

This patio-side water garden transcends time and space, taking one away from the everyday rushing noises of the surrounding suburbs and enveloping him or her in a setting of peace and harmony. The artistic blend of botanical and native aquatic plant species attracts a multitude of brightly colored butterflies and song birds, lending to the mysticism of the setting.

1st – OUTDOOR LIVING LLC
Stately steps feature a guillotine-cut stone with a natural rock-face finish called Dove Grey. On the lower steps are saw-cut ends with the steps placed next to each, creating longer steps at the base and gradating up to create a grand entry. Wisconsin Chilton flagstone was used as the walkway and landing. Reclaimed limestone from the home’s site was used for the retaining walls flanking the stairway.

A carefully scaled terrace facilitates lounging and relaxation. The simple, square water surface reflects the geometry of the contemporary architecture and counters the lush ground-cover carpets.

Using clean lines and a symphony of textures, this project connects the simple aesthetic of the architecture to the densely wooded site around it. The lower pool terrace and aggregate stone stepper path leading to it embrace several large trees. Lines of bright groundcover soften the edges of the pool terrace, while rugged specimen boulders and flowering trees add focal points and color. Set apart from the house and pool terrace, a custom wood-burning fire pit (with gas assist) provides a perfect gathering space.

EXTERIORS | Residential Landscape Design Under One-half Acre

1st – ART | HARRISON INTERIORS
When the designers began to plan this small-scale Birmingham garden, they knew they wanted to create the feeling of greater depth than the limited space would allow. The axis of the garden was rotated to go corner-to-corner on the bias, creating an elongated view across the city garden space. The center of the garden features a moat, created to house the owner’s prized Koi fish.

EXTERIORS | Residential Landscape Design Between One-half and One Acre
DESIGNER’S VISION – This backyard project was an entire yard renovation with a purpose of making the yard a more useful living space.

1st – BACKER LANDSCAPING
The addition of a moderate-size, in-ground pool is a central element. A built-in gas grill and a custom-built masonry gas fire pit also share the space. The original fountain was left intact, as were many of the brick walls. With the exception of pear trees and some shrubs adjacent to the new pool house, all of the landscaping, plant material, and landscape lighting was newly designed.

Every detail of this landscape was designed as a visual symphony and study in stonework. Every stone element, while contrastingly different in shape, texture, color, and size, melodiously complements the others. As composed, all blend harmoniously to provide a unified visual concert-in-stone that is ever-changing as one moves about the estate.
