Among 17 commendable options, this 3,500- square-foot home in an established, downtown Rochester neighborhood was the most popular selection among readers who voted for Best Overall Home at detroithomemag.com.

The homeowners, from Montana, wanted a new home with traditional flavors that would contain several elements of their ranch back in Montana.

Exterior materials combine stone, cedar shake, and cedar lap siding, while the front porch boasts an arched-wood ceiling that is reinforced by a glass entry. Indoors, an inviting two-story foyer presents views to the backyard, where the eye is drawn to an illuminated 2,000-pound bronze equestrian sculpture.

A covered rear terrace is accessible from the dining and kitchen areas through a retractable door system. The terrace has retractable screens that allow it to function as part of the interior living spaces for three seasons. Traditional yet clean details provide an updated classic feel. Custom-built light fixtures, finishes, and stair railings blend to create a uniquely designed home that suits its owners perfectly.
