Reader’s Choice: Best Overall Home

AZD Architects, Bloomfield Hills with Force Building Company, Birmingham

It’s all about the pool and cabana at this ultra-modern home on a double lot in Birmingham. While this year’s Readers’ Choice winner features spectacular outdoor elements, even more spectacular is the fact that they’re also very much a part of the indoors, thanks to a unique design that allows the home’s residents to see the pool and cabana from every room in the house.

An all-glass, two-story foyer undoubtedly turns heads with its glass bridge and handmade light fixture, and it’s easy to see that very little drywall was used in the home. Furthermore, there’s no trim or casings. Clean lines abound!

The continuous use of stone and wood seems to flow from the front of the home to the back, resulting in an A-plus design that soothes rather than jars.

This year’s Detroit Home Design Awards’ Readers’ Choice winner features spectacular outdoor elements — pool, cabana, and luxe landscaping — that can be seen from every room in the house.

The waterfall at the cabana wowed readers, as well as the 10-foot line of fire that’s flush to the pool’s surrounding concrete.

The home’s exterior features square and rectangular shapes veneered with clear cedar, smooth limestone, organic stone, and metal that are connected by a floating linear roofline.

The smooth limestone block is mixed with an organic stone, and accented with wood and metal tones. Echoing the home’s exterior design, the landscape is also a series of geometric shapes of concrete, wood, and Corten metal accents — and the artificial grass requires no maintenance! There’s even artificial grass on the entire upper-level flat roof area, for a more appealing view out of the upper windows.

Well done, AZD Architects and Force Building Company!
