For southeast Michigan native Colin Tury, it was βthe ability to affect everything in a space, and tell a story while doing itβ that first drew him to interior design. βItβs amazing what you can do with a sheet of paper and a pencil.β
Before launching his eponymous firm, Tury Design, in 2024, Tury earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and received a Master of Fine Arts from Herron School of Art + Design in Indianapolis. He also served as the furniture and lighting director at AvroKO in New York City, and contributed to retail design, audio products, and lifestyle goods at Shinola before co-founding Midwest Common, where he specialized in branded interior spaces with a focus on custom furniture, fixtures, and lighting.

At his new Detroit-based firm, Tury emphasizes custom experiences. His goal, he says, is to βalways tell stories and let the spaces be the vehicle for that.β Functional design augmented by storytelling is how he describes his design philosophy.
He also has a highly specialized focus on custom millwork and lighting, as demonstrated by one of his favorite projects: Vecino, a modern Mexican restaurant and bar in Midtown Detroit. βVecino is a great case study of brand-applied narrative,β Tury says. βWe got to affect so many elements in the space, and it only helps transcend the patronsβ experience.β Another favorite is Supino, the beloved pizzeria in Eastern Market. βIt was fun because the challenge was to improve the space without losing the soul of the brand.β
In his off time, Tury enjoys making things and can often be found in his shop, creating. When not in his shop, he loves to be outside β especially if it involves camping and food. βAny excuse to make food in the woods is good enough for me,β he says.
Well deserved, Colin!
