This contemporary Prairie-style home, designed and sited to relate to its environment, was the most popular choice among readers who voted for Best Overall Home at detroithomemag.com.
They chose this house, with expansive views of wetlands and wildlife, from among 12 worthy options. In creating this residence, VanBrouck and Associates in Brighton and Deborah Frank Interiors of West Bloomfield Township embraced the tenets of Prairie style while adding contemporary elements.
On the exterior, rough-cut stone anchors the house to the earth. Lighting in the eaves highlights the stone’s texture at night. Inside, furnishings and materials are modern, light, and neutral. The kitchen, a present-day interpretation of the classic hearth, features generous space for sitting, dining, and living.
The use of exterior stone in the kitchen integrates the indoor and outdoor spaces. At the rear of the house, a large porch with retractable screens provides expansive views of the landscape.
