The washed aggregate concrete porch, steps, and arrival plaza were designed with a custom ornamental steel handrail to create a welcoming experience. Earth-tone paver paths, a terrace patio, and stone slab steps meander through perennial and ornamental grass plantings along Wau-Me-Gah Lake, while a casual pathway of crushed granite leads to a natural stone slab fire feature. The weathered steel walls and curbs blend with textural understory plantings and paperbark birch.

For this Contemporary home, the entry walls were designed to complement the architecture by utilizing the home’s brick. Meanwhile, the mailbox, address numerals, and a lighting transformer recess into the masonry. Washed pea-gravel exposed aggregate walkways, terrace patios, and a fire feature blend with the environment, resulting in a natural feel.

The site of this home includes a large pond, which was dredged and cleared of invasive vegetation. Aerators were added to promote oxygenated water, which is also utilized for site irrigation. The perimeter was regraded, and turfgrass rolls into the pond to emulate the water features found throughout the neighboring golf course. A dry riverbed, made of cobblestone and boulder outcroppings, was designed to control the water elevation.

This residential landscape delights the senses and creates a magical experience for the homeowners and their young children. Ledgestone steps, terraces, and intricate plantings immerse one in the space, while rock outcroppings, stone planters, and wooden structures provide accents. A repurposed swimming pool serves as the centerpiece. The original pool shell is preserved; large boulder elements were inserted to provide seating, diving platforms, and a dream-like, habitable waterfall.

Expansive drifts of ornamental grasses anchor the planting design of this landscape, establishing a meadow-like feel around the patios. Deciduous conifers — dawn redwoods — were selected for their unique feathery texture, which complements the meadows and creates a canopied entry experience. Soft lighting washes the facade, while subtly positioned path lights and uplighting gently highlight the property’s ornamental trees and mature oaks.

At the center of this pool cabana is a sheltered fireplace that’s a year-round destination for gathering and warmth. Designed as a permanent architectural element rather than a decorative accessory, the fireplace serves as both hearth and focal point for the surrounding lounge. Its finish in a 30×30 matte dark cosmic dust tile, installed in a staggered pattern, lends a rich, textural quality that enhances the sense of depth and permanence.

Expansive drifts of ornamental grasses anchor the landscape design and establish a meadow-like feel, while river birch create an ornamental transition to the mature red oak grove and deciduous conifers (dawn redwoods were selected for their texture). The driveway leads guests up the sloping topography and highlights dramatic views of the 2.6-acre site with its pond, meadows, the nearby golf course, and stunning architecture. A generous service court and parking area are nestled within elegant planting masses.

This property transports you to a classic European courtyard that takes visitors through a series of vignettes. A TechoBloc hardscape provides a series of tiered living spaces, adding more usable areas to this property, while plantings stabilize the hillside and provide a naturalized setting to surround the built elements. The softness of the grasses and birch offset the formality of the hedge work, creating a beautiful hybrid of traditional and modern.
