Historic Renovation (50 Years and Older)
1st Place – CBI Design Professionals Inc., with Integrated Architectural Interiors
The homeowners were dedicated to returning this home to its prior glory. To do that, the kitchen was replaced by a space with more careful detailing. A three-car garage and workshop were added while renovating the family room, which had been the garage. A mud room and laundry room replaced some poorly used areas. The side porch was enclosed, and heavy timbers were added. The master suite needed renovation, and repairs were made to the exterior plaster, where neglect had taken its toll.

Small-Space Remodel (Up to 1,000 Square Feet)
1st Place – Maison Birmingham, with Victoria Strickler — Scott Shuptrine Interiors
This stately English Manor home, built in 1923, needed to be updated to reflect a modern lifestyle. Classic white oak herringbone flooring ties the spaces together. The kitchen is zoned to perfection with designated areas for prepping, cleaning, cooking, and serving; neutral custom inset cabinetry has a clean but warm feel. The cabinetry hardware and grilles were brought in from England to enhance the design’s integrity. The bar features polished nickel fixtures to give the space its own personality.
Judge’s Insights
“The designers’ beautiful use of color makes this space (by Maison Birmingham, with Victoria Strickler — Scott Shuptrine Interiors) a winner.”

Large Remodel (More Than 1,000 Square Feet)
1st Place – Cottage Company Interiors, with Cottage Company of Harbor Springs
Extensive beadboard, a light and colorful palette, and abundant windows framing lake views at every level are featured in this cottage. Designed as a generational cottage, it accommodates the whole family, including extended family members. The great room was opened up to expand a spectacular water view. Hardwood floors, refinished in a darker hue, now make a statement against the white wood paneling. Fun wallpapers were added to bathrooms, along with new countertops, mirrors, lighting, and hardware.
Designers’ Goals
“To make the most of water views and design a generational cottage that can accommodate the whole family, including extended family members.”

Expansion plans included the implementation of properly supported steel beams and reworked spread footings, as well as use of state-of-the-art insulating materials and ultra-high-efficiency HVAC equipment. The now-open foyer brings natural light in, and existing bedrooms now utilize the attic space, resulting in dramatic high-vaulted rooms. A Jack-and-Jill bathroom threads between the two bedrooms, a four-season conservatory was fashioned from a porch, and a second-floor laundry was added. The visually stunning master suite features cathedral ceilings.

Apartment/Loft/Condo
1st Place – Patrick Thompson Design
The open plan of this loft in Midtown Detroit posed a distinct design problem: How can a designer break one room into multiple functional areas without introducing superfluous walls and dividers? The loft now features living room, dining room, and kitchen areas. Through the use of rugs and furniture clusters, the space remains open but the functions are clearly delineated. The resulting home is functional and cozy, yet open and industrial.

“What a fun and inviting space (Patrick Thompson Design’s Midtown loft). I love it!”

This small cottage skillfully incorporates features that would normally be restricted to a larger home. A story-and-a-half gable runs the length of the home, enveloping most of the interior spaces. To the rear, a pair of gables flanks a covered dining area that connects to a screened porch, and the kitchen connects to all of the other main-level spaces. The master suite has several closets and built-ins, as optimizing storage space was essential. Upstairs there’s a bunkroom, guest room, and exercise space.
