1st – Centric Design Studio

Interior walls and a balcony were removed in this art gallery, David Klein Gallery, Detroit, and the newly open and free-flowing space boasts well-preserved elements from times past that, combined with fresh updates and hidden storage solutions, demonstrate that opposites can come together harmoniously. The ground-level entrance attracts pedestrians and visitors alike, with two glass windows that showcase a rotating artwork display. A large selection of lighting featuring warm hues illuminates the eclectic nature of the interior, as well as the artwork that will regularly transform this space.

1st – Michael J. Dul & Associates Inc.

The simplicity of Agree Realty Corporation’s Bloomfield Hills headquarters landscape architecture is grounded by masses of dwarf fountain grass planted along its foundation. Ornamental paving defines an arrival court, and a straightforward walk that acts as a site spine leads pedestrians to the outdoor dining terrace and parking area. The terrace area is separated by ornamental grass masses that also serve as a base to the building, while the parking area is positioned at the lowest part of the site and feeds the building by means of a graceful walk and staircases.

1st – Davis & Davis

The Galleria Officentre in Southfield was developed in 1983. Its new design activates the space with modern lighting, greenery, and features that create an uplifting, dynamic user experience. Digital photos on perforated metal panels adorn the entry walls, and sculptural staggered glass pendants draw the eye upward. The flooring pattern and wall tile assist in wayfinding by visually alerting visitors to the offset corridor placement. A security desk with backlit panels, slab porcelain, and a digital directory complete the light and bright, updated look.

1st – VanBrouck | Luxe Homes, with Oliver Max Interiors

Natural light filters into VanBrouck | Luxe Homes’ main office in Birmingham from full plate-glass windows that span the width of the building. On the lower level, a central conference area is open to office workspaces on both sides, which are bookended by lobbies. French doors close to offer privacy, yet allow light to filter through, and a white-glazed, paneled gallery hall connects the streetside lobby to the alleyside lobby. The upper level features two conference rooms; expansive sliding-glass panels on modern barn-door hardware offer privacy. Box-beamed ceilings cleverly provide a conduit for electrical lighting.

1st – Patrick Thompson Design Inc.

An old, dark shop was turned into the Livernois Tap in Ferndale, a modern interpretation of a traditional European beer hall. The space features three pairs of 11-foot-high glass doors that open the taproom up to a large biergarten with traditionally aligned tables, lamp posts, large trees, and a cozy fire pit. The interior features a mix of traditional European details and accessories, metal shop furniture that nods to the Motor City’s roots, and modern murals from local artists.
