BETH GROSS OF Cedar, in northern Michigan’s Leelanau County, opened Farm House Candle Co. in 2014 after she couldn’t find what she was looking for in the way of naturally fragranced candles. “I started experimenting and soon I was coming up with scents that not only did I love, but my friends and family did, as well,” says Gross, who’s shown below, along with a trio of her products. Eventually she turned her hobby into a full-fledged business. The candles, which exude a rustic vibe that blends industrial-modern packaging, come in jelly jars with pewter tops. “Having a lid was important to me, to help lock in the scent and preserve the candle,” Gross says. Made with soy wax that comes from Midwest farms, the candles’ scents are unique. “A mix of fruit, herb, and masculine aromas ensures there’s a scent for everyone,” she says. If you’re looking for a romantic scent, consider the Woodsmoke + Apple variety. “It has elements that remind you of a warm fire, with undertones of mulled apple — making it extra cozy and inviting.” Her two all-time favorites? Bergamot + Amber and Vanilla + Tobacco. “They’re both spicy, masculine, and warm.” Great for lighting up some romance!
