WHO: Shirley Wickman, is the principal designer/owner of Ann Arbor-based Cyrus Interiors. She studied design at Sage College in New York and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in interior design from the Illinois Institute of Art. After gaining industry experience in both New York and Chicago, she moved to Ann Arbor in 2004 to found her residential and commercial design firm. Wickman’s uncommonly chic spaces have garnered her much recognition, including multiple Detroit Home Design Awards, along with honors from the American Society of Interior Designers.

DESIGNER’S GOAL: The vision for the space, shown above, began with the Kuba bedding collection from Wildcat Territory. “I loved the colors and the different pops of interest (they add),” Wickman says. “The rest of the fabrics and furnishings worked off of that inspiration.” The designer wanted to offer the Novi homeowners a relaxing and timeless space where they could feel calm and insightful in equal measure. The linens complement the room’s color scheme and add texture and pattern to the design, making the space interesting as well as comfortable. Blue and brown tones were selected for their calm palette, while the warm hue of the accent wall grounds the space.

Shirley Wickman’s Bedroom Design Tips

• Color is the first thing to consider; it sets a mood or purpose for any room.
• Use items of varying scale.
• A definite no-no is matching everything. Incorporate different tables and finishes to help make each space unique.

“Mix different side tables or fabrics. Don’t be afraid to use a stripe pattern with a floral, or a traditional light fixture in a contemporary setting.” – Shirley Wickman

WHO: Bailey & Shamoun Interiors of Northville co-owners Kathryn Bailey and Basma Shamoun-Miscovich have more than 35 years combined in the interior design industry. As business partners and friends, Bailey and Shamoun-Miscovich work in tandem to bring elegance and harmony to their designs, while mixing in friendship and fun for clients and themselves.

DESIGNER’S GOAL: The focus of the master bedroom was to create a tranquil retreat for the owner of this elegant and spacious Bloomfield Hills home. “We’ve had the privilege of designing three homes with this homeowner, each unique with features that require special touches,” Bailey says. “Tranquility kept coming to mind as we made the design selections,” Shamoun-Miscovich adds. The designers focused on linens that are relaxed and durable, yet embody a refined elegance. “The mineral gold/sage hues provide a subtle yet glamorous appeal,” Bailey says. “From there we launched all the accent pieces, upholstery, and drapery to pull it together.”

Bailey & Shamoun Interiors’ Bedroom Design Tips

• Large spaces, especially bedrooms, need warmth and texture, Kathryn Bailey says.
• Lighting is critically important. A beautiful chandelier is the crown jewel in a beautiful room, according to Basma Shamoun-Miscovich.
• Shamoun-Miscovich cautions clients to be aware of the effect lighting has on color. Both direct and indirect lighting levels can change the impact of the colors used in the environment, and different colors adapt differently to transitions in lighting.
• Don’t be shy, Bailey advises. We love to be whimsical and fun, yet keep an elegant theme at all times!

“The drapery fabric is our ooh-la-la-moment every
time we look at the windows. It’s so warm, cozy, and chic!”

– Basma Shamoun-Miscovich
