Interior designer Jennifer Mitchell’s got great taste. It is, after all, part of her job. With an interior-design firm and a daily blog devoted to all things design (www.designholeonline.com), Mitchell’s not afraid to share her style secrets and insider info. Knowing this, we asked her to tell us where she goes when she’s on the hunt for home goods. Here are her favorite local hot spots for home décor, in no particular order.
1. Mezzanine (Detroit; 313-887-0900). “If you appreciate contemporary design, this is the place to go. Owner Joe Posch really knows his stuff and sells fantastic lines of home furnishings and accessories from some of the best designers working today. Swedesi, E-15, and Moooi are three of my favorites. If you’re not in the market for furniture, check out his home accessories. I particularly like the vintage glass from iittala.”
2. Bureau of Urban Living (Detroit; 313-833-9336). “I love this shop. It’s a wonderful place to find one-of-a-kind things that put the finishing touch on a room. I like their toss pillows from Hybrid Home and accessories from City Bird. The Bureau does a great job supporting Detroit through their ‘First Thursday’ benefits.”
3. Village Picture Framing & Art Gallery (Dearborn; 313-278-4870). “A client introduced me to this art gallery tucked away in Dearborn. Owner Tom Clark has a brilliant eye when it comes to framing — including hand-wrapped linen. He also has a great selection of signed prints, original art, and home accessories.”
4. Vertu (Royal Oak; 248-545-6050). “Vertu is the place to find pedigreed vintage furniture and accessories. These guys aren’t the friendliest in the world (mostly, they ignore you) but they’ve got great stuff. They are especially perfect for that accent piece, like a chair or nice, vintage glass. But they also have dinnerware, lighting, art, occasional and dining tables, etc. What’s fun about Vertu is there is always something new to check out.”
5. The League Shop (Grosse Pointe Farms; 313-882-6880). “This shop has an undeserved reputation for being uber conservative. While they do have plenty of Herend bunnies, they also carry high-quality contemporary vases and dishes. Their lamps are great, too.”
