ARTICHOKE INTERIORS
WHO: Dawn Jacobs, 248-425-1745, artichokeinteriors.net
With a passion for all forms of art, history, and architecture, principal designer/owner Dawn Jacobs, right, of Clarkston-based residential design firm Artichoke Interiors, has a keen eye for color and design. Jacobs earned her Bachelor of Science degree at GMI (now Kettering University) and received an MBA from the University of Michigan–Flint. After working for a retail design/architectural firm, she opened Artichoke Interiors. She brings 12 years of experience and thousands of hours of reading and continuing education classes to each of her projects. “Learning never ends,” she says.
THE MAKEOVER: Jacobs discovered this 1962 Shasta Airflyte camper, right, online, and created a luxurious, happy space.“I chose a glam-nature theme,” she says, “and used vintage colors, adding retro finds to honor the era of the camper.” She replaced rotted wood and rebuilt the bench seats and pull-out bed; refinished the wood table; polished chrome moldings; painted walls and cabinets; and added vinyl wood plank flooring. “She’s a hit!”
Designer Jacobs on How to ‘Glam-up’ a Camper
Space is tight, so don’t bring in a single thing you don’t love or need.
• Splurge on fabrics and tile. You don’t need much of it.
• Think about how things will be transported. Road trips are bumpy.
• Materials have to be lightweight and durable. A designer can help make decisions that are both beautiful and practical.
• Opt for a comfortable mattress and luxurious sheets. After a long day outdoors, you deserve a great night’s sleep. And don’t limit yourself to camping food. Caviar and champagne work in this “glamping” world.
