What trends are you seeing now?
Eco-friendly products are a major trend, from soy candles to renewable materials like bamboo in fabrics, flooring, and furniture. In terms of finishes, there’s a lot of brushed steel and nickel-plated finishes. Color is bright, vivid, and cheerful for the entertaining areas of the home. In bedrooms and bathrooms, Zen colors such as taupe, serene blue, sea-glass green, and chocolate brown take over.
How do you keep things fresh?
Rotate the “jewelry” of your home, such as lamps, throw pillows, vases, and area rugs. Switching lamp shades seasonally from beige, cream, and white for spring and summer to a more dramatic black and brown for the fall and winter.
When you think of style constants in your life, what are they?
My design style is eclectic and dramatic. I like to juxtapose old and new, periods and styles. I gravitate to classic pieces with a new fresh twist. In terms of patterns, stripes always manage to show up in my designs.
What companies or labels do you love right now?
Harrison-Gil. It’s French design meets Asian craftsmanship and materials. [They produce] beautiful, dramatic furniture and mirrors in solid java wood and metallic finishes. Gus Furniture from Canada is an affordable twist on modern classics. Global Views has fabulous accessories, lamps, and occasional tables.
Finally, if we could choose one thing to buy this season, what should it be?
Get something leather. Something shiny — a nickel or crystal lamp livens up a room. An indoor fountain to bring fortune and tranquility. A fragrance, so your friends and family remember you. The sense of smell is a powerful element in memory.
