Powder Room Panache
A chic farmhouse-style bath looks great in grays
BACKSTORY: When designing the powder room of Brad and Miriam Klintworth’s Bloomfield Hills home, interior designer Megan Bildstein, of Meg Corley Premier Interiors, says she wanted to create a farmhouse style that was compatible with the rest of the home. “We did it like a little jewelry box,” Bildstein says. (See accompanying article on the kitchen created by Meg Corley Premier Interiors for more information on the home.)
BLACK, WHITE, AND GRAY MATTERS: Homeowner Miriam Klintworth loved the black, white, and gray color scheme and the dynamic pattern of the 6- by 6-inch ceramic tiles that grace the wall behind the sink. “When Megan showed me tile samples, I knew instantly these were the ones I wanted,” Klintworth says. “I think they add a little bit of a feminine touch.” Adds Bildstein: “I decided to use tile on just one wall in order to utilize black, white, and gray patterned artwork on the adjoining wall, which has been painted gray.”
VANITY FARE: The traditional wooden vanity features a soft gray glaze that emulates a hand-painted finish and has furniture-like turned legs.
MAKING A SPLASH: The homeowner says the rectangular sink, in white porcelain, is just the right size for this substantial vanity cabinet. “It’s also the right size for the four pairs of hands that belong to my four sons who constantly use it, even though I tell them not to use this restroom,” she says. Adds Bildstein: “This is my go-to sink (when it comes to designing). It’s rectangular with a really cool geometric pattern, and its black drain adds interest.”
LET THERE BE LIGHT: On the ceiling, a pretty glass lighting fixture features a quatrefoil pattern, is channel-set on the sides, and is edged with oil-rubbed bronze. (The sink faucets are made out of the same bronze.)
ROYAL FLUSH: The one-piece toilet features “comfort height” and AquaPiston (fast/powerful) flush technology. “It has a clean look and is easy to clean,” Klintworth says.
HICKORY GROOVE: The floor consists of 5-inch-wide hickory wood planks that have been hand-scraped and distressed, then given a walnut finish. “The planks gave the floor the rustic farmhouse feeling we were going for,” Klintworth says.

The Heart of the Home
It’s “Come one, come all” in this large, comfortable Bloomfield Hills kitchen
BACKSTORY: Megan Bildstein, of 10-year-old, Southfield-based Meg Corley Premier Interiors, was hired to do the interior design for a new-build in Bloomfield Hills. Homeowner and builder DA Contracting, LLC (Brad Klintworth and his wife, Miriam) wanted the 6,000-square-foot home to be inviting and comfortable for their family of six. A classmate of Miriam’s from West Bloomfield High School, Bildstein has known the homeowners for many years. “They came to me when the layout of the house was done,” says Bildstein, of Commerce Township. “I implemented the interior architecture and design.”
GOALS: “They wanted a farmhouse feel and I took off with that, creating everything in 3-D,” says Bildstein, who has a degree in interior design from Michigan State University. She was hired at Birmingham-based Jones-Keena & Co. right after graduation in 2002, and worked there until 2007. “The homeowners didn’t want the home to feel sterile, and even though it’s large, every room feels comfortable.”
ISLAND TIMES TWO: Calling on Acorn Kitchen & Bath, Bildstein worked two islands into the layout. “This provides better flow than one long island, where you’d have to walk around it to get to main areas of the kitchen,” she says.
ON THE FARM: “Miriam always wanted a farmhouse style, and she knew from the get-go she had to have a farmhouse sink,” the designer says. “Every photo of a kitchen she showed me had a farmhouse sink.”
MASTERING THE MIX: The off-white cabinetry features a glaze that’s perfect for the farmhouse style. “Implementing that warmer shade with the bright white of the sink and countertops provides depth,” Bildstein says. Using beaded glass on some of the cabinetry contributes to the “old feel,” she adds.
ACCENT ON RUSTIC: Mason jars and white glass vessels add to the farmhouse feeling.
BRONZED: “The homeowners wanted oil-rubbed bronze, so we used that for the cabinetry and light fixtures. It’s all very cohesive.”
BRICK TRICK: “I designed the archways between the family room and the foyer area leading to the study to be brick, so when considering backsplash ideas behind the range, I thought, let’s use brick. That way, the kitchen is truly tied in with the rest of the house.”
CANDLE CAN-DO: More old-world vibes come in the way of the light fixture above the islands. “It’s got ‘candles,’ it’s long and linear and open with no glass, so there’s a simplicity to it.”
DESIGNER’S FAVE: “The large bay window over the sink. The view and the brick backsplash add to the charm of the house.”
HOMEOWNERS’ VERDICT: “I love it; it’s so functional and can hold many people. My favorite part is the double island; the kids can be at one island and we can be prepping food on the other,” Brad Klintworth says. Adds Miriam: “The greatest thing about it is how open it is. Open and airy is the best!”

Open House
With walls removed and a 180-degree flip, this kitchen is now where the dining and living rooms were
THE BACKSTORY: Berkley-based Preservation & Renovation (a husband-wife team) transformed this 1964 Colonial-style home in Birmingham by giving it an open-space floor plan and a chic interior design. The 10-year-old company (Desiree Dutcher oversees all design and materials while her husband does “everything you can’t see”) remodeled the entire home and worked to “keep the kitchen timeless,” Dutcher says. That includes white cabinets, classic subway tile (“beveled, not your typical,” she says) and a gray/blue/white palette. “It’s easy to change up if they ever get tired of it,” says Dutcher, who has a design degree from Baker College. “The homeowners moved from a small home in Royal Oak and only a few items came with them; everything in their home is pretty new.” Today, the kitchen is where the dining room and formal living room use to be. “We flipped it 180 degrees,” Dutcher says.
PERFECT TIMING: Laura and Jim Stephenson purchased this home in September 2017. Fulll-house interior renovation began in early January 2018 and was completed in May 2018.
LEVEL PLAYING FIELD: The project included leveling all the floors. “Everything was off,” Dutcher says.
FARMHOUSE FADE: The homeowner liked the farmhouse look, Dutcher says, but she wanted something that would be elegant over time. “We weren’t going to do a ‘Magnolia’ home.”
TASK AT HAND: “Task lighting creates ambiance and is so important in a space. The polished nickel and silver finishes and brass accents are beautiful,” Dutcher says, adding that the light makes cleaning up at the end of the night nearly enjoyable.
SHELF LIFE: “The open shelving is a neat way to add art to the kitchen — plus, it’s functional and allows the homeowner to add her personality,” Dutcher says. “We actually stained the floors to replicate the color of the shelves.”
EASY DÉCOR: This kitchen features a bevy of beautiful cutting boards and marble slabs that, when propped up against the wall, appear to be artwork. Dutcher says she has something similar in her own kitchen. “I’ll grab the large one for chopping, the marble one for cheeses, et cetera. The combination is usable and pretty; that’s form and function!”
HOMEOWNER’S VERDICT: “It’s a dream come true to gather with family and friends in a space that we were able to customize, down to the smallest of details,” Laura Stephenson says. “Our absolute favorite part is our large island that’s perfect for enjoying meals as a family, or entertaining our friends.
