WHO: Principal designer Kitty Golding, of Chelsea-based design firm Kitty & Company Interior Design, has put her stamp on everything from condos in Chicago to lake homes in Michigan for more than 28 years. Golding considers the relationships with her clients paramount in achieving a successful design; to that end, she offers her clients follow-up consultations. “The partnership between the client and the designer needs to be solid, with lots of trust, for it to work well,” she says. Known for more than residential designs, a Kitty & Company commercial office space was recognized at the Detroit Home Design Awards in 2018.

DESIGNER’S GOAL: Hamburg Township homeowners Brian and Deb Schroeder had two goals when they decided to remodel their basement: They wanted a tap room with a rustic, industrial feel for entertaining friends, and a fully-functional brewery so they could brew indoors year-round. Golding did some research and then asked her clients a series of questions to assess their specific needs. “We had to design a home bar area that would not only accommodate brewing … but look great for entertaining,” Golding says. To assist in the development, she tapped Derrick Dixon and his team at Trademark Building Solutions, based in South Lyon.

KITTY GOLDING’S BAR DESIGN TIPS
• Knowing what equipment is necessary is important. In this case, we needed to make sure we had an industrial sink, a kegerator (a refrigerator that dispenses beer), room for brewing kettles, a full-size refrigerator, and more.
• Consider your focal point. My favorite items in the bar are the copper and stainless brew burners that hold the kettles. They’re pieces of art as well as conversation pieces.
• Make sure there’s enough leg room under the counter, and that you have the right height of stool.

“The live-edge cherry slab bar top from John’s Urban Timber (in Whitmore Lake) warms the industrial tones and is a beautiful place to sit.” – Kitty Golding

WHO: Principal designer and owner of AMW Design Studio, Amy Miller Weinstein, attended Cranbrook, the University of Michigan, the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, and Harrington College of Design in Chicago. Weinstein has 35 years of interior design experience and will mark the 10th anniversary of her Birmingham studio this March. Over the past 10 years, she has earned an exceptional number of Detroit Home Design Awards for her luxurious and sophisticated contemporary designs. She continued her winning streak in 2018, placing in the top three of seven categories, in addition to earning top prizes in the Home Office and Historic Renovation/Restoration categories.

DESIGNER’S GOAL: A minimalist aesthetic was the guiding principle in this Birmingham home bar. The focal point was constructed by Troy-based Perspectives Cabinetry and includes dark faux wood cabinets, stainless accents, and an onyx natural stone countertop from Troy-based PMP Marble & Granite. Vying for interest is a temperature-controlled wine room with custom metal wine racks forged by Waterford-based Gallery Steel, whose dark finish is intended to relate to the all-important bar. “The goal was to seamlessly connect the two spaces with the use of a frameless glass wall and door system, creating a beautiful solution for both areas,” Miller Weinstein says.
