SUGAR AND SPICE AND EVERYTHING NICE. That was certainly on the minds of a couple of area designers, who waved their magic wands to create these two girls’ bedrooms. Although both rooms evoke an effervescent quality and reflect several feminine elements, neither strays into precious or princess territory.
1. KRISTIN ROSS
WHO: Ross runs Grosse Pointe-based FINISH by red décor. The designer has more than 20 years of experience in fine painting (much of the time with her husband, KC) and interiors. Her eclectic aesthetic is derived from her study of art history and sculpture, in addition to her passion for world travel.
DESIGN GOAL: “Your home should tell the story of you,” she says.

A VIVACIOUS RETREAT: “The girls who inhabit this space (decorated for the 2014 Junior League of Detroit Designer Show House) are full of life,” says designer Kristin Ross, “and I wanted the design to reflect that. The room (in a Grosse Pointe Park home) is bathed in a feminine, energetic coral and accented by a range of blues to create vibrant charm. The opulent chandelier creates an air of juvenile sophistication.”
A-HEAD OF THE REST: “These headboards give the room a sense of grandeur, drawing the eye upward and paying homage to the history of the client’s home. Their crisp white color tames the bright coral walls.” Custom-made of reclaimed doors from a local historic home of the same era as the client’s home. Available through Kristin Ross, $725 each.

2. KRISTA NYE SCHWARTZ
WHO: Schwartz and business partner Tami Ramsay own CLOTH & KIND in Ann Arbor and Athens, Ga. The duo is known for creating spaces with story and substance. Each project is layer-ed with a meticulous mix of one-of-a-kind, curated finds, then finished with a heavy dose of unique custom textiles, art, and furnishings. Their design work and blog have been showcased in House Beautiful, Lonny, The Atlantan and The Huffington Post, to name a few.
DESIGN GOAL: Classic, with a modern vibe and an intriguing, worldly influence.

A CHARMED SPACE: “This bedroom was designed for my daughter, Tahlia, a vivacious 4-year-old,” says designer Krista Nye Schwartz. “She’s a combination of tomboy — never fearful of bugs, skinned knees, or thunderstorms, and can keep up with her 6-year-old brother and his friends without missing a beat — and super-girly. I wanted her room to be a reflection of her personality, and just any ‘pretty pink room’ wouldn’t do. The space is nearly as quirky and special as she is!”
PRINCESS SANS THE PRECIOUS: “The bed (Pondicherry, with nailheads) is fit for a princess, but without the priss. It perfectly complements the custom lamp shade above.” $1,950, Serena & Lily, serenaandlily.com.
TREASURED HEIRLOOM: “A love of textiles and design must run in my family, because my mother is nearly as big a textile addict as I am. The quilt on the bed is vintage, 1940s, This is the quilt that graced my parents’ bed as I was growing up — it has fond memories of home for me. To see it loved by my daughter makes me all the more sentimental about this well-worn family heirloom.”
GRANDMA’S TOUCH: Schwartz’s mother lovingly stitched the pillow on the chair. “It was the final touch and just what the room needed,” Schwartz says.
